Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats

I have been actively writing my learning log and shared my experience of university on a weekly bases.However, I would like to share my SWOT analysis too.

Strengths & weaknesses

When I started this course the main reason was not just to become a successful interior designer but also a responsible designer who takes the responsibility of any pros and cons caused by design. Making a commitment to start this course wasn't an easy decision for me as I am a mum of two young children and manage a student accommodation too. My hands were already full but my passion of interior designing helped me to make a firm decision to take this course on board.

I started my journey from the 2nd year in University as I already had some a certification in interior design before. Alongside my all other responsibilities I managed my University assignment quite well where I had to work till late or sometimes all nights. My second year was a great success, I received excellent grades which resulted my second year overall marking as 1st class. My personal tutor Mathew Morris was a great inspiration for me. I learnt great design and technical skills from him. which I carried forward with me in 3rd year.

My greatest strength is my patience and resilience. This year I have tested on patience at every stage by nature, which resulted me in great level of pain and misery but I never gave up towards my University commitments. Sometimes you are been tested don your strengths too much that they start to weaken you from inside.

Propitiously, I have years of experience in hand-drawing so I can easily sketch my ideas anywhere at anytime. However, during these years, my drawing skills have developed even better which helps to design something totally different to what others design starting straight with Sketch up and developing through uploading Sketch up warehouse models. My freehand sketching skills made my to develop my ideas through sketching and by making hand drawn visuals it helps me to achieve my individual style. It is great tool which I can carry anywhere and every where to show show clients some initial ideas then and there during our client meetings.

Alongside my sketching skills, I have a good command using all different softwares used in the industry and I have magnificently learnt well to use Auto Cad, Sketch up and Photoshop. After I finished designing I start to develop my design in Auto Cad and once I am satisfied by my planning then I start work on the sketch up and Photoshop to make visuals. My weakness were industry software when I started this course but I immensely developed my software skills and the proof can be seen through my portfolio.

Opportunities & Threats

My mission of accomplishing this course in a great respect is about to come to an end and the next step is to secure a job before graduating. I have been actively applying for an interior design position and I have received a very good response so far I have been contacted by few design companies for an interior design position. I had passed two telephonic interviews, one was for kitchen design position at Wren kitchen showroom and other was Junior Interior design position at LOFT Interiors. My telephonic interviews were great success and I had been further invited for a face to face interview. My interview with loft interiors was last month and they really admired my work and invited me for a final interview which will be in May. Below are the screen shots of my interview invitations:

I am open to all opportunities in the design industry, I am just worried if with my new role I will be able to show my creativity or not as a Junior Interior designer you are mostly working on other's designs to help them, I hope I get an opportunity where I will be given a project too to showcase my creativity.

Right now, I am proactively working on final major project of my choice which gave me an opportunity to showcase my creativity and design abilities. I have three weeks and I want to achieve a lot in these three weeks. Time is everything and one of the biggest threat for me is that everything goes well as I want. My computer files are becoming heavier as they contain a rich amount of work, I am saving my work proactively so if one file get corrupted I can start again with the last saved one. Threats are always in a designer's life the only way is keep calm and carry on!
