CENTRE INTER-GENERATIONAL
FOR THE THE WELL-BEING OF THE COMMUNITY
(FINAL MAJOR PROJECT)
WORK IN PROGRESS...
INSPIRATION...
I accumulated some images to get inspiration and to start the design process. I really liked the idea of making a space multi purpose. Integrating learning and fun zones together will make a space stimulating and interesting for both generations. By researching deep into my subject matter, I did some research for my concept and really liked the yin-yang concept, which means old and new two things together. I researched few kids library interiors and spaces which can accommodate both generations . It's a complicated and complexed job to design a space for children and elderly as both generations have different needs and ergonomics. Next step is developing the initial concepts into a functional design and finalise the floor plans, making decisions on finishes, furniture, lighting and general scheme for each main interior space and then producing detailed technical drawings, notes on the site specifics.
DESIGN BRIEF:
TITLE: A UNIQUE INTERGENERATIONAL CARE CENTRE
The purpose of this brief is to outline the design needs and requirements of the Unique Intergenerational Care Centre in Manchester City Centre.
RATIONALE:
Our busy life style and longer working hours making it difficult for us to manage our day to day tasks and with the care responsibilities of either children or elderly parents we struggle to give quality time to our children and elderly parents and to provide reasonable care what they need. Whilst been busy in the never ending race of the world, my idea is to cater and address the two main community issues i.e. childcare cost as well as loneliness and social isolation of seniors aged 75 year and above in the UK.
My passion to address and act on the issues highlighted above, I will be designing a unique space for two different generations i.e. children and senior people to help improve their well-being as both play a vital role in our wider community. I was also inspired by a television programme ‘Old People Home for 4 Years Old’ which was based on Intergenerational Care Centre, showed a remarkable improvement and progression (physically and mentally) within both generation when engaged together. The research revealed facts and figures about funding and care issues we are currently facing in day care centres, nursing homes and child care centres. To facilitate and to acknowledge the issues, Intergenerational Care Centre would be a milestone towards integrating two different care units together.
AIM:
My ambition is to create a unique Intergenerational care centre. Whilst carrying out my research, I have gathered that elderly people are not taking part in physical and brain storming activities as they are spending most of their time sitting, relaxing, watching TV or sleeping which leads to poor mobility and causing mental illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer’s. My aim and main concept is to design an Intergenerational Care Centre which will provide a pathway and a well-designed space to both generation i.e. children and senior people. This space will encourage both to engage together, take part in physical and brain storming activities to improve their mobility and help maintain healthy brain instead of relaxing on a chair all day and watching tele or just playing board games. In addition, the space will be equipped with a library facility to share and learn through books, computers, arts and craft workshops. This one stop centre will also give carers and mums to engage, share and unwind themselves.
INTER-GENERATIONAL CARE CENTRE FOR A WELL-BEING OF THE COMMUNITY
SITE ANALYSIS:
SITE REQUIREMENTS:
The site should be easily commutable and should have as much buzz as the design brief. It should be close to local amenities and public transport links. Manchester City Centre would be an ideal place for such a centre as not only it is easily reachable through different public transport links but also a vast majority of people living in greater Manchester work in or close to city centre. Majority of these people either have child or parents care responsibility which will give them a helping hand going forward. Having such a centre at the heart of central Manchester also give homemakers, carers and mums to drop their children/elderly parents in this unique centre whilst they meet their friends or do their shopping.
LOCATION:
Hanover is the gateway to Manchester’s buzzing shopping, eating and entertainment area and neighbours the trendy Northern Quarter and Victoria Station. Hanover Street in Manchester is in the North West region of England. The postcode is within the Ancoats and Clayton ward/electoral division, which is in the constituency of Manchester Central. The address is Honover Building, Hanover Street, Manchester.

BUILDING ANALYSIS:
A gateway building, Hanover provides a key connection with Manchester’s main high street shopping and close to Manchester Arndale, Market Street and New Cathedral Street. It also bridges the leisure offers provided at the Corn Exchange and The Northern Quarter whilst being just a stones throw from the Manchester Arena.
Hanover is a good example of Edwardian Baroque architecture, constructed in red brick with polished granite and sandstone dressings. Local materials were used wherever possible, including Baxenden bricks, stone from Darley Dale in Derbyshire and granite from Aberdeen. The façade has pilasters and Corinthian order columns and the roof is concealed by parapet walls.

The site is under Construction right now. The building will consist of four floors. The project name is NOMA Hanover. The first building from the NOMA listed estate brought to market beautifully blends heritage character with stunning contemporary design. A glorious double height arched doorway offers a prestige entrance to the building. Retail space benefits from direct access from Corporation Street.
New entrances open the atrium creating a walkway with a stunning view of the interior, showcasing overhead vibrant red walkways that link the office floors. The ground Floor is planned to be retail space, the reception area is in the centre of the ground floor and the ground floor is further divided on the front and back of the building.I will use half the space of the retail space which is situated on the back side of the building. There are back doors as well to make fire escape route as well.
THE VISION:
My vision is to use the site for its vibrant and unique celebration of heritage and culture together. I will use the ground floor retail space for my unique inter-generational centre. The vibrant site will also aid to stimulate the both generations and would be a nicebreakout for anyone going to the Manchester city centre.
THE PLAN:
The proposed site plan is on the ground floor of the Hanover building. The Hanover building was built in two stages and there is a large atrium space within these two buildings. The front part of the building is known as Cooperative Wholesale Society building and the back part of the building is known as E-Block. I am proposing to use E-block ground floor. Please see follow the plan of the building:

I am writing a weekly log on my progress on Negotiated Major project also known as Final Major Project. Please see below:
Week 1 commencing from 29/01/2018:
A successful Research project leads to a great final major project. I wanted to create a space for elderly and children to combat the social issues of loneliness and isolation amongst senior citizens and childcare crisis.
On Monday afternoon, we had Negotiated Major Project's module launch and briefing. The brief was about the aims and learning outcomes of the module which were to develop our autonomy, design skills, collaboration, consideration of the space and building structure, creative design processes, problem solving and exploration of materials.
We also did a small activity to plan a timeline for ourselves to have a direction throughout this module.

Week 2 commencing from 05/02/2018:
In the past few weeks, I have been trying to research and working on obtaining the site plan and luckily I found the contact details of the Project Manger of Hanover building. I sent him an email to introduce myself as a final year student of Interior design and to request the site plan. After he received the confirmation from the University about my student status, he provided me plan of the Hanover building.
The next thing was to check the scale of the plan and to read the technical details of the drawing to know about the building.
I had my first tutorial with Tim on Thursday for Negotiated Major Project module. It was a very useful tutorial as Tim guided me through what is expected at this design stage and what I need to do going forward.
Firstly, I made a plan of work to schedule myself and also list of accommodation, which will aid me to make bubble diagrams and zonal plans.

I also went to the library to get some books relevant to my project and I got New Metric Handbook to know about the ergonomics as it is very crucial to design a space for two different age groups with different needs.
Week 3 commencing from12/02/2018:
On Thursday I had one-to-one tutorial with Tim. I showed him my list of accommodation and then he guided me through to develop my zonal plans into layout plans. I worked on the zonal plan and layout plan for the presentation of concept crit for Negotiated Major Project Module. Please see below the freehand working of layout planning:

My list of accommodation and zonal plan feed well in the layout. I am designing a space for two different generations with different needs, it gave me an idea of Yin & Yang Chinese concept : "dark-bright", "negative-positive" describes how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world and also the infinity loop. For me the connection of these two generation is beautiful and eternal.
Week 4 commencing from19/12/2018:
On Wednesday, I did my site visit for Negotiated Final Major Project. Please see below site pictures and description:
Later that day, I compiled all the work done to date for the Negotiated Major Project and made a presentation for the Concept Crit.
On Thursday, I gave my Concept Crit presentation for Negotiated Major Project. I did well and get appreciation from my tutor and got some helpful feedback going forward with my project.
Please see below my Concept Crit presentation slides:
Week 5th and 6th commencing from 26/02/2018:
I made few layout options and sketches which are shown below.
Create Zone design development sketch:

Breast feeding pod design development sketch:

Cafe Zone design development sketch:

Relaxing pods area:

Design of relaxing pods:

Design sketch for sleeping pods with dimensions:

I developed my design and focused into each area to be designed and made some sketches to show materials and lighting.
Week 7 commencing from 12/03/2018:
I compiled all the work done to date and made my presentation which is due on Thursday.
I gave my presentation and got constructive feedback on my design. My sketches and ideas were really admired by everyone. I was advised to take few elements out of my design and reconsider about the idea of breast feeding pod. The idea of sleeping pod was not going well with the theme as I wanted a space to get them active and as there will be two different shifts and each shift will be 3 hours long so I have decided to discard the of sleeping pods.
I was also advised to look how organic forms and curves develop in interior design as my design is curved. I researched different interior and architectural spaces which have curve in their design and I quite liked Zaha Hadid's work.
Easter break- work in progress from 19/03/18 - 06/03/2018:
I continued working to develop my plan and sketch up files during the Easter break. I made my GA plan and also made my sketch up model for the building .

During My Easter break I kept coming to University in order to complete my work as much as possible. I also made all my project evelvations. Please see below:

Week 8 commencing from 09/04/2018:
I showed my plan to my Tutor and he guided me to work on the technical issues in my plan as well as on the curves in my plan. I took my tutors feedback on board and made the changes accordingly:

On Tuesday 10/14/2018 we had a refresher session in workshop. After attending the work shop, I had a discussion with Kostas one of the workshop demonstrator about model making. I had a discussion with him re laser cutting my model and he advised to make DXF files.
I started working on the files in order to get them ready for tomorrow and the following day I booked a session with him to laser cut a Maquette. He went through the files and spotted that they were too big and were not scaled accordingly. Later that day I continued working on the files as per his instructions. Please see files below:

Week 9 commencing from 16/14/2018:
Technical Crit:
I received a constructive feedback on my Technical Crit and there were few points raised during the presentation which I needed to work on. Please see list of points below:
Workout ergonomics for children and elderly needs.
Get rid of the projector in the play area.
Make an element in detailed model from my design.
Check line weights in CAD drawings.
Add zonal plan in my presentation and annotate the plan.
Week 10 commencing from 23/04/2018:
I am developing my sketch up file and continue working on it to complete and finish ASAP as I have to start making the final presentation boards.
